Redistribution of gross production value as a strategy to stabilize community incomes in arid zones: A case study in the NCPE Nuevo San Pedro, Coahuila

We assessed the management plan of the NCPE Nuevo San Pedro (Coahuila, Mexico) to estimate and redistribute the gross production value (GPV) from non-timber forest products (Euphorbia antisyphilitica, Lippia graveolens, Dasylirion cedrosanum), timber resources (Neltuma glandulosa), and the Wildlife Management Unit (UMA). Using authorized harvest volumes (2024) and local prices (2023), we built an income baseline and modeled an alternative scenario that integrates biological seasonality, productive phenology, and market demand. The baseline revealed a strong dependence on candelilla (>60 % of GPV) and marked seasonality with income peaks in february and november. Rescheduling extraction across the year homogenized gross per-capita income at 14 604.41 MXN month-¹ per ejidatario, reducing inter-monthly variability and increasing financial certainty while complying with permit limits and authorized areas. Findings indicate that GPV redistribution, co-designed with producers, is a replicable strategy to stabilize incomes and strengthen the socio-ecological resilience of ejidos in arid regions.
