Silver nanoparticles in the disinfection of Tillandsia usneoides (Family: Bromeliaceae) for its micropropagation
Silver nanoparticles in the disinfection of Tillandsia usneoides (Family: Bromeliaceae) for its micropropagation

This research sought to observe the effect of silver nanoparticles as a disinfectant agent for hay (Tillandsia usneoides) under in vitro conditions, in order to obtain harmless explants, since the excessive collection of this species, also known as paxtle or Spanish moss, coupled with the loss of natural habitat, is putting wild populations at risk, as well as the loss of traditions, when it is even used to perform dances (México). The aim is to identify a technique for its legal production or conservation of viable germplasm, for which two bioassays were established, the first combining immersion times and concentrations of plant nanoparticles (eight treatments) and subsequently combining the best results with pre-washes with two agrochemicals (20 treatments). The treatments in both assays managed to obtain harmless explants; however, tissue damage due to oxidation or necrosis was observed. Furthermore, a latency was observed, with no changes recorded in the explant during the experimental period. However, no organogenesis occurred, except for slight elongation in some explants. However, additional tests with lower exposure times and concentrations would be advisable to optimize results.
