Seaweed is a resource with abundant bioactive compounds, which have received great interest in recent years. Proteins, carbohydrates, amino acids, vitamins, hormones, minerals, and other compounds of brown, red and green algae have a broad spectrum of properties as functional food, in medicine, cosmetics and plant growth biostimulant. In the country, the systematic studies on nutrition and chemistry of natural bioactive compounds are deficiency to provide scientific data to support its use as a functional food, medicine, cosmetics and biofertilizers. This review considers the potential use of marine algae present in the coast of Jalisco through (i) collections and the registration of species present in the region and (ii) based on previous investigations of the use of marine algae that show their composition and properties for phenotyping the biological effectiveness of marine algae in the 20 localities of the Jalisco coast. This type of research is essential for future Mexican industries to develop effective strategies for the use of marine algae.
