Abstract

In the present paper, Ulva lactuca extract was used at different concentrations as an imbibition treatment of mung bean seeds and its effect on the growth parameters of the seedlings was evaluated. The positive effects were observed in the length of the radicle of seedlings treated with 0.2% of UL2 and 1.0% of UL6. The highest value of dry weight was registered from seeds soaked with 0.2% of UL8. The acidic extracts of marine algae showed better results in the biochemical parameters such as chlorophyll, which resulted in an increase of chlorophyll a and b in the plants treated with UL4, UL8 and UL10 at 0.2%. Also, total carbohydrates and reduced sugars were increased with treatments of UL2 at 1.0% and UL10 at 0.2% respectively in mung bean seedlings. The active compounds contained in the liquid seaweed extract stimulated the growth of the seedlings and could be used as an imbibition method for seeds, which is potentially able to promote rapid and more uniform seed germination and plant growth.
