Analysis of the management units for the conservation of wildlife in the state of Coahuila

This study analyzed the data from the Wildlife Management Units (UMA) of the state of Coahuila, obtained from the Secretariat of Environment. Using R software and ArcGIS® tools, historical records, geographic locations, and information on species use were processed. In 2024, Coahuila counted 1,002 UMA, covering 3,343,990.578 hectares, representing 22.06 % of the state. Compared to 2010, the number of UMA has increased by 11.46 %. Of these, most are on private properties (858 UMA), with a predominance in the northeastern region. The municipalities of Zaragoza, Acuña, Guerrero, Progreso, and Juárez account for 43.01 % of the UMA. A total of 140 species were identified, with notable species such as Pecari tajacu, Odocoileus virginianus texanus, and Puma concolor. Regarding utilization, 415 UMA requested permits to hunt Pecari tajacu, but only 13 implemented the activity, and of the 121 authorizations for Sus scrofa, only 27 were carried out. This low level of use reflects limited interest in certain species, despite the large number of permits requested, highlighting the need to improve the implementation of management plans.
