Effect of the aqueous extract of Neem (Azadirachta indica) in the control of ticks (Rhipicephalus sanguineus) in dogs

Abstract

Introduction: The leaves of Neem (Azadirachta indica) have active principles such as azadirachtin, salanin, meliantrol, nimbin and nimbidin. Azadirachtin is the most important since it is associated with an ectoparasiticidal activity. Objective: To evaluate the effect of the aqueous extract of Neem on the stages of ticks (Rhipicephalus sanguineus) present in dogs (in vivo), and compare the results with those caused by a commercial product based on coumaphos 1%. Material Methods: The Neem extract was prepared with 150 g of dried leaves per 100 ml of distilled water, and 10 ml of 96 ° alcohol to obtain an infusion and prepare a shampoo. The experiment was carried out with 50 dogs of medium size of different breeds, housed in individual cages with different degrees of natural infestation by ticks, were divided at random into two groups of 25 dogs each: group 1 (G1), bath with a tick rats, commercial in the form of soap and group 2 (G2), bath with the Neem extract in shampoo. The number of ticks was evaluated at 0, 7, 14, 21 and 28 days. The statistical comparison was made with the Mann-Whitney Rank Sum Test (Sigma Stat 3.2). Results: The initial ranges (G1, 161 & G2, 149) and averages (36.9 & 31.6) show no statistical difference. From the first week (median: 12 & 3) and up to the fourth week (median: 1 & 0) the reduction of ticks was important for both groups, with statistical difference. Conclusion: The Neem extract had a tick effect in shorter time and longer duration than the commercial product.
