Red mangrove (Rhizophora mangle L.) is widely used in herbal medicine due to its numerous pharmacological properties, primarily attributed to its high content of phenolic compounds. These compounds provide antioxidant, antimicrobial, antimutagenic, cytotoxic, and antiulcer properties. The composition of carbohydrates in the aqueous extract of red mangrove bark (R. mangle) was characterized using trimethylsilyl (TMS) derivatives of carbohydrates and confirmed with alditol acetate (AA) derivatives. Total sugars in the freeze-dried product represented 17.5%, with the major component accounting for 14.8%, and carbohydrate structures representing only 2.7%. The carbohydrate composition of R. mangle bark included rhamnose, arabinose, xylose, and fucose (56.94%, 13.33%, 12.62%, and 12.35%, respectively) and ribose (4.75%). Both derivatization methods revealed the presence of a major non-carbohydric compound, possibly a polyphenol co-extracted and analyzed with the carbohydrates.
